Re: November 9th and December 18th Devine ISD Staff Development/Student Holidays

Hello Devine ISD Families,

I don’t have to tell you that this pandemic has placed a great burden of responsibility on educators not only here in Devine, but across the state, the nation, and the world in general. Administrative difficulties aside, the majority of teachers who work for Devine ISD are planning for both in-person and virtual instruction, the latter of which most have never attempted before.

At the request of the Administrative Team and in order to improve instruction, the Devine ISD School Board approved a motion to file an application for a Staff Development Minutes waiver during their October meeting. This waiver is made available to Texas public schools through the Texas Education Agency. The Staff Development Minutes Waiver will provide DISD’s instructional staff with the time they desperately need to plan effective lessons, activities, and assessments for the students of this great district.

This waiver allows district staff to plan various educational strategies designed to improve student performance in lieu of student instruction during the school year. It provides for a maximum of 2,100 total waiver minutes (about 4-1/2 school days). Each district may choose how to apply their approved waiver; for instance, schools may choose to offer early release, late start, all day staff development, or a combination.

Devine ISD was approved for the Staff Development Minutes Waiver on October 28th. Our administrative team, with input from teachers and staff, has designated November 9th and December 18th as staff development days for planning curriculum and instruction. These days will now also be designated as student holidays for remote and in-person learners. Students will not come to school on these days.

November 9th and December 18th will be considered mandatory days for all staff.
Additional staff development/student holidays associated with this waiver will be announced as they are designated.

Devine ISD is a student-first district. We are aware that the single most influential factor for student success is the quality of instruction. We truly believe that this decision has been made in the best interest of our students and that student success rates will rise as a result of increased teacher team, grade-level, department, and campus curriculum and instruction planning time. On behalf of Devine ISD, I thank you once more for demonstrating flexibility and patience as our dedicated staff work diligently to plan meaningful learning opportunities for your students.
