Dear Parents and Community,

We will soon begin a new school year with anticipation of another year of successful accomplishments by our students and staff. As we begin this year I want to make you aware of some changes that we will be working on to help secure our campuses. In light of recent events around our country and even here in Texas with school shootings, the Governor has asked for schools to take steps to improve our security. Devine ISD was already planning to make improvements to better secure our schools prior to the Governor’s report and had already implemented many things Governor Abbott recommended.

Devine ISD has initiated renovation projects to better secure our campuses with some added fencing and controlled access doors so we are better able to monitor our buildings. We will begin the year with some components of construction ongoing, but anticipate the work to be completed by the end of September at the very latest. Access to campuses will be more restricted; however, there is no change in where to pick your child up before the end of the school day. All visitors and guests will continue to check in at the office.

The safety and security of our students and staff has always been our top priority, and as stated above in relation to recent events in our world it has become necessary to improve and update our buildings in the area of security. In securing our buildings, we understand that we risk seeming unfriendly, but we want to assure you that is not the case. Parents and community members are certainly welcome at all our campuses during school hours and our various activities and events. We will have some new protocols with access to our buildings, so we ask that you continue to work with us by signing in at all campus offices, and by following check-in and check-out procedures for our students. More information will be sent out from campuses on any new protocols or information as timelines are met on completion of our projects. We ask for your patience as we learn and work together to implement these new protocols and security upgrades, all the while doing our best to keep all new procedures to a minimum.

Also, as I stated in one of my safety letters to the community earlier this year, that with all the technology and training available to us, our best preparedness is a sense of awareness by all.  Taking care of each other and looking out for one another is our best defense.  We have great schools, and their safety is a responsibility for the entire community.  I want to thank the great community of Devine in advance for your patience and understanding during our construction and implementation phase of this security project. Our job is to educate the children of Devine who are our most valuable assets, and I would like to reiterate it has always been our top priority to keep them safe while preparing them for their future.
